League away Avondale United on Saturday 7th January
Avondale United 3 Midleton 0
Midleton travelled away to to top of the League Avondale Utd. It was a game that Avondale where always in control of there passing was much more crisp than Midleton and their attacking pace stood out. But things could have been different from the very start. Cian Flemming had a great srike after only 10 min but his shot was cleared off the line. Avondale went on to score two before halftime.
Midleton to there credit had a much better second half with Knowles and Stapleton coming close at times in front of goal. But Avondale defence where up to the task and kept Midleton at bay. Avondale scored their third goal with 5 min to go.
Midleton will now look to their next league match to get some valuable points to climb away from the bottom half of the table.
League at home to Mayfield United on Friday 9th December
Midleton 1 Mayfield United 0
Midleton collected their first three points in the league with a well deserved display at home to Mayfield. The points where very important and it was also revenge for losing out to Mayfield in FAI Intermediate cup. The all important goal came about when Andrew Knowles did very well to cross for Ian Stapleton, Midleton only goal. Midleton had a number of other chances but manager John Ryan will be very pleased with the result and look forward to the new year with more confidence.
Their next game is a league match next Friday at home, 7.30pm.
League at home to Leeds on 13th Novmeber
Midleton 2 Leeds 2
Midleton Senior team where again denied three points when in the closing minutes of the match Leeds equalized from a free kick. Midleton had taken the lead twice in this game Andrew Knowles scoring both goals Midleton. Ian Stapleton had some good opportunities in front of goal but it wasn't to be his day.
Midleton continue to play good football in this very competitive premier league but results just not going their way. It was nice to see Andrew Knowles back on form and receiving the Beamish Stout Man of the Match.
Keep it up lads.
League away to Everton on 25th September
Everton 2 Midleton 2
Midleton seniors met Everton in the Premier Division of the Munster Senior League on what was a very wet and blustery morning at Everton Park. Midleton started very well, dominating the opening exchanges of the first half even though they were playing against a strong wind and up the infamous Everton Park hill. Midleton created a lot of chances up the right with Martin Hickey and Brian McCarthy combining to good effect and probably should have been ahead had any one of number of good crosses been converted.
However after 15 minutes Midleton were dealt a sucker punch when a free kick inside the Everton half found its way to the back post and was converted with an impressive first time shot.
Midleton kept pressing however and again had the better of the play for most of the remainder of the half. With 20 minutes left in the half a mixup in the Everton defence saw the ball fall to Killian Flavin whose low shot from 25 yards found the bottom corner of the net. Playing conditions were very difficult with both wind and rain playing havoc and this was to prove to Midleton\'s undoing shortly before half time. A clearance form the Everton half was missed and a low cross into the Midleton box was adjudged to have been handled by a Midleton player and Everton converted the resulting penalty kick.
Midleton came out in the second half determined to turn the tie around. Everton\'s keeper made a great save from Martin Hickey\'s 20 yard pile driver after some very good midfield build-up play. With 15 minutes gone in the second half Midleton were rewarded for their battling in the middle of the park. Ian Stapleton was put through on goal and while the keeper saved well from his shot Brian McCarthy was taken down in the box after collecting the rebound. Ian Stapleton sent the keeper the wrong way and finished high into the top corner.
The match ebbed and flowed with chances for a third falling to both sides. With 5 minutes on the clock Midleton were reduced to 10 men when Peter O\'Halloran was sent to the line after challenging the Everton centre forward who was bearing down on goal. Everton piled on the pressure and hit the post twice in the closing stages even though Midleton still looked a threat on the break. Midleton held out though and after 5 minutes of injury the referee called time on the match.
While Midleton had the better of the chances over the 90 minutes both sides were happy with a point. Midleton players put in a strong performance throughout with paticularly strong performances coming from Dave Stack, Martin Hickey, Mark Duggan, Tom Daly, Brian McCarthy and Killian Flavin.

FORD FAI SENIOR CUP 3rd Round on Friday 3rd June
Midleton 0 Cork City 2
Declan Barron reports from Knockgriffin Park
Midleton had a full house on last Friday night at Knockgriffin Park for their Ford FAI Cup clash with Cork City. The Midleton club left no stone unturned in preparation for this fixture and their hard work was rewarded with a fine attendance on the night.
The result however did not go their was as their Air Tricity first division opponents proved just that bit too strong and recorded a 2-0 victory that was far from comfortable. Indeed had Midleton taken one of two good first half chances they may well have caused Cork City a few more problems.
As it was Midleton more than matched their opponents in the first half with Ian Stapleton playing in Stephen O’Leary, who tested Mark McNulty from 30 yards, with the City goalkeeper scrambling the ball to safety at the second attempt. Cork City too had an early chance when Danny Murphy floated in a cross that was volleyed by Gearoid Morrissey but Jason Green in the Midleton goal reacted quickly to save in the 15th minute.
Understandably Midleton were reluctant to break forward in the early stages and kept things tight as Cork City had plenty of possession but were confined to long range efforts which rarely troubled the home defence. As the half progressed Midleton did become more adventurous and a dipping 30 yard drive from Ian Stapleton almost broke the deadlock, but it ended on top of the net with McNulty in the Cork City goal backpedalling.
Just before half time Midleton got the best chance of the night so far with Ian Stapleton putting the ball into the path of Andrew Knowles who broke clear. Knowles raced towards goal and hit a powerful shot over the top when a little more composure might have yielded a lead goal. It remained 0-0 at the break, with Midleton perhaps unlucky not to be in front as they created the better goal chances.
On the resumption Jamie Murphy was introduced for Cork City in place of Gearoid Morrissey in an attempt to stretch the Midleton defence who up to then had not a put foot wrong. The move worked as Graham Cummins tempted Michael Kenneally into making a rushed tackle that yielded a 7th minute penalty to Cork City. Cummins picked himself up to slot the ball past Jason Greene. Worse was to follow for the home side as City upped the tempo with Midleton wobbling a little and five minutes later they conceded again as this time Vinny Sullivan fired a shot across the penalty area that eluded the Midleton defence and ended up in the net with Jason Green appearing unsighted.
A disaster now looked on the cards but a few astute subsutitions by Manager John Ryan steadied the Midleton ship as they again worked hard to stay in the game. With Mark Duggan, Kevin Tattan and Paul Deasy all now involved, the Midleton attack again began to ask a few questions of Cork City once more. A free kick into the area saw Mark Duggan contest in the air with Stephen O’Leary firing the loose ball onto the crossbar with Mark McNulty again beaten. Had Midleton gotten a goal it would have been a great reward for their efforts on the night.
As the game moved towards a conclusion Cork City could have increased their lead but Jason Green produced another fine save to deny Graham Cummins while Jamie Murphy had a similar miss to Knowles when he blasted over late on. In the end those two goals early in the second half knocked Midleton’s confidence, but they will be very happy to have matched Cork City in most departments and would have taken a 2-0 defeat at the start. The game was a triumph for Midleton who had their academy player’s lead out the teams while their successful sides in the Cork Schoolboys league were presented to the crowd at half time.
Goalscorer Vinny O’Sullivan was named Ford man of the match and his award was presented to him by Paddy Pollard, Chairman of the Munster FA. Midleton too had their own man of the match and Stephen O’Leary was a worthy recipient as the left full forced Mark McNulty into a fine saves in the first half and struck the crossbar with a thunderous shot in the second half. All in all a fine game of football, well refereed by Anthony Buttimer and a credit to both Cork City and Midleton who can be well pleased with the occasion overall.
Cork City: Mark McNulty, Stephen Mulcahy, Kalen Spillane, Graham Kavanagh, Danny Murphy, Gearoid Morrissey, Shane Duggan, Vicente Escude Candu, Derek O’Brien, Vinny Sullivan and Graham Cummins. Subs used Jamie Murphy, Ian Turner and Kieran Kenneally.
Midleton: Jason Greene, Martin Hickey, Michael Kenneally, Peter O’Halloran, Stephen O’Leary, Tomas Daly, Killian Flavin, Ray Barnes, Brian McCarthy, Andrew Knowles and Ian Stapleton. Subs used Paul Deasy, Mark Duggan and Kevin Tattan.
Referee: Anthony Buttimer, with assistants Ken Hennessy and Tony Yazur.
FAI Cup away to Belgrove on 17th April
Belgrove 0 Midleton 1
After an absence of nearly 20 years Midleton are back in the FAI cup first round proper after a fantastic result in Dublin yesterday. Midleton were the better team in the first half with Brian McCarthy and Andrew Knowles running the home defence ragged at times. Tom Daly and Ian Stapleton in midfield were excellent while in defence Midleton's back 4 were seldom under presure.
With 5 min remaining and a replay looking likely, up popped match winner Mark Duggan with a great header from an Andrew Knowles cross, leading to scenes of wild celebration from the midleton dugout.
........who do the players want in the next round...shamrock rovers or cork city at home was the agreed choice on the party bus on the way home...watch this space...
League at home to UCC on 9th April
UCC 1 Midleton 1
This was a good draw considering we had 7 players missing through injurys and work. After a lazy start and going 1 down after only 10min Midleton got their passing game going and slowly took control of the game. Peter O'Halloran scoring a fine equaliser after 15 min of the 2nd half. Midletons midfield was excelling with Tom Daly have a fine game helped by the ever busy Mick Kenneally. A few late chances went a begging but overall a point was enough to see Midleton safe for the season and condem UCC to 1st division football next year.
Best for the magpies were John Mallon and Tom Daly.
League at home to Tramore Athletic on 11th Feb
Midleton 4 Tramore Athletic 1
Midleton moved into 3rd place in the premier division of the munster senior league with a comfortable win at knockgriffin last friday night. Midleton made a few changes for this game giving Shane Harrington his senior debut in defence. Starting brightly Midleton were 2 nil up at half time with goals from Peter O'Halloran and Martin Hickey.
Two further goals 1 by Killian Flavin and 1 from Andrew Knowles left Midleton well in command of the game with 20 minutes left. A penalty from Tramore with 10 min to go did knock the gloss of the result a small bit, but everyone connected with the team must be thrilled with the reaults to date and with Tom Daly and Ian Maher back from long term injurys thing a looking good for the run in.
Best for midleton was the excellent Martin Hickey and Killian Flavin.
League away to Mayfield United on 6th Feb
Mayfield United 2 Midleton 5
This game was played in appalling conditions. 1 nil down after only 3 minutes Midleton fought back to level the game from an Andrew Knowles strike 25 mins in. The wind played a big part in Mayfield's second goal leaving Midleton trailing 2-1 at the break.
A
a great 2nd half from the magpies followed. Goals from Andrew Knowles (48min), a Killian Flavin header from a Paul Deasy corner (55min), left Mayfield chasing the game. 2 further strikes, 1 from Paul Deasy (surely a contender for goal of the season) and 1 more from Andrew Knowles who completed his hat trick finished the game as a contest. The last 10 minutes were completed without any problems for Midleton indeed it gave the management a chance to re-introduce a player who has found his way back to his first love of football the great John Mallon....welcome back John.
3 good points move Midleton into 5th place, consolidating what has been a very good return to the premier division of the munster senior league. Best for Midleton were Killian Flavin, Raymond Barnes and Andrew Knowles.
FAI Cup at home to Bangor Celtic (Dublin) on 30th January
Midleton 5 Bangor Celtic 1
Midleton progressed to the quarter final of the intermediate cup with a resounding victory over a much fancied Bangor Side. Midleton started sluggishly but played themselves into the game, the slippery pitch not helping both teams to get their passing game going. Midleton took the lead from a penalty from Ian Stapleton after a hand ball on the line by a Bangor defender. 2 more goals before halftime, 1 by Paul Deasy and a fantastic "bici" from Stapleton left Midleton firmly in charge at half time.
Bangor got back in the game early in the second half but 2 further goals, 1 from Andrew Knowles and another from that man Ian Stapleton to complete his hattrick left Bangor with no chance of a comeback. A fantastic display from Midleton with Ian Stapleton taking another man of the match award....and NOT Peter Horgan as was suggested in Wallis bar after the game.
League at home to Blarney United on 14th Jan
Midleton 2 Blarney United 1
Midletons good form continued on Friday night with a great result against a very good Blarney United team despite going 1 nil down as early as the 8th minute. Midleton went on to dominate the first half creating numerous chances especially down the right hand side where Brian McCarthy's pace and accuracy was proving a thorn in the side of the Blarney defence. A great headed goal by Ian Stapleton from a Paul Deacy free kick just on the half hour mark was a result of constant pressure on the Blarney goal.
The second half continued much as the first with Midleton having the better of the chances with captain Martin Hickey and Peter O'Halloran both coming close to getting a second for the magpies. Eventually the winner did arrive from the boot of that man Ian Stapleton after a beautiful through ball from Andrew Knowles. Ian slipped the ball under the outrushing Blarney keeper and out of the reach of the covering defender. A great 3 points that puts Midleton in fine form for the big cup match v Dublin big guns Bangor Celtic.
Best for the magpies were Peter Horgan, Steve O'Leary and 2 goal hero Ian Stapleton. Congrats to Andrew Knowles who won the Wallis' bar player of the month for December.
FAI Cup away to Ballyfermot United Sun 12th December
Ballyfermot United 2 Midleton 3
Midleton travelled to Dublin to take on Ballyfermot United last sunday and came away with a well deserved victory. leaving at 7.45am was a bit of a shock to most of the lads let alone the handfull of hardy supporters who made the journey, after the dreaded toast and scrambled eggs at a local hotel the Midleton lads were well prepared for the battle ahead.
Midleton started the brighter of the two teams and should have been 2 up before Andrew Knowles lached onto a great through ball to fire the magpies ahead after 22 minutes. 5 minutes later we were 2 up when Ian Stapleton raced through a stagnent "Ballier"defence to fire home. A deflected goal helped to raise the home teams hopes just before halftime but any chance of a come back were dealt a fatal blow when that man Andrew Knowles finished of a great move with an exquisite lob from 30 yards.
A late surge from the home team saw them score with 5 minutes to go, but Midleton were well over their hosts and could and should have added to their tally.
Best for Midleton were the excellent Kevin Tattan and Micky Kennelly, while the 2 goalscorers always looked dangerous. A quick word of thanks to Ballyfermot who were excellent hosts throughout, their welcome and sportsmanship must be commended.
League at home to Avondale United on 26th Nov
Midleton 1 Avondale 0
After a break of a few weeks Midleton got back to league business last Friday night at a freezing cold Knockgriffin park. In a real cup tie atmosphere Midleton came out on top thanks to a super strike from Andrew Knowles who scored against his former team. Midleton were on top for most of the game with Martin Hickey playing the best football of the season so far, Micky Kenneally, Peter O'Halloran and Ian Stapleton were all in excellent form aswell. In goal Jason Green made some vital saves to keep another clean sheet helping to raise the confidence of the whole team. The result puts us fifth place, well away from the dreaded relegation places and sets us up nicely for our trip to play Ballyfermot United away in the intermediate cup next weekend.
Munster Senior Cup 1st round away to Mallow United 16th Oct
Mallow Utd 0 Midleton 1
Midleton continued their good start to the season with a hard fought victory away to Mallow on Saturday afternoon, played on a terrible pitch this was a battle start to finish. Midleton were on top throughtout with James Murphy leading the line well with Andrew Knowles working hard around him.
Indeed it was "murph" who got the vital goal early in the second half with a well placed header at the back post from a well delivered Raymond Barnes corner (yes that Raymond Barnes he who didnt wear his tracksuit to the game). Tom Daly and Mark Duggan played well in midfield and Peter O'Halloran and Mick Kenneally were never in much trouble at the back. This was a tricky fixture for Midleton who did well to come away with the victory despite plenty of provocation from a "robust"Mallow outfit.
Donie Ford Trophy Semi Final home to Blarney Utd on 9th October
Midleton 2 Blarney Utd 3 (after extra time)
What a game! Played in very windy conditions both teams served up a cracker. Midleton dominated the game but still found themselves 2 down after 10 minutes of the second half. 2 lapses of concentration made a comeback unlikely but this Midleton team has spirit and no small level of skill. 2 well taken goals from front man Andrew Knowles, the second a vicious half volley that the Blarney keeper did well to get out of the way of set up the final 20 minutes of total domination by Midleton.
Mark Duggan and Ian Stapleton were well on top in the middle of the park creating plenty of chances for James Murphy and the excellent Andrew Knowles, indeed the Blarney keeper (man of the match) made an unbeliveable save from an audacious Duggan bicycle kick.
In extra time it was all 1 way traffic to the Blarney goal, surely a winner would come before the dreaded penalty shootout. It did but for Blarney who scored with the last kick of the game....
a blow for Midleton but the players must take hugh pride from a fine display.
League v Everton, Everton Park, Sept 26th
Everton 2 Midleton 2
Midleton continued their good start to the season by earning a good away point in Everton Park on sunday morning. Two first half penaltys from Kevin O'Brien were just some of the highlights of an excellent performance by the lads. John Mallon and Peter O'Halloran were on top throughout, while Ray Barnes, Tom Daly, Kevin Tattan and Kevin O'Brien in midfield all battled hard against a 5 man Everton midfield.
Up front Mick Kenneally and Andrew Knowles ran themselves to a standstill ensuring Midleton returned with a share of the points. Indeed but for a dubious refereeing decision 8 minutes from time the 3 points would have surely returned to Midleton.
League v St Marys, Knockgriffin, Sept 17th
Midleton 1 St Marys 0.
Midleton recorded their first 3 points in their first home league game of the season under the lights at knockgriffin park last friday. In a very even first half both sides had chances with Ian Stapleton, James Murphy and Andrew Knowles all testing the St Mary's goalkeeper.
In the second half, Midleton upped the pace and Micky Kenneally was finding loads of space wide on the left where he had the better of the struggling St Mary's defence. The winner finally arrived from the boot of the impressive Andrew Knowles who buried his shot passed the stranded St Mary's goalkeeper much to the delight of the sizeable home support.
So its onwards to Everton park next sunday morning, with an air determination vital to succeed in this league.
Donie Ford Trophy Quarter Final away to Casement Celtic on 11th Sept
Casement Celtic 0 Midleton 2.
Midleton were comfortable winners in this donal forde cup quarter final clash in casement park cork. Midleton dominated the opening exchanges with John Mallon and Peter O'Halloran dealing easily with anything Casement threw at them, while Ian Stapleton and Michael Kenneally always had the upper hand in their midfield battle. Indeed it was Ian Stapleton who opened the scoring with what must be a contender for goal of the season with a free kick from all of 40 yards.
A second goal early in the second half from debut boy Peter O'Halloran secured the victory and but for some wastefull finishing from Midleton, including a missed penalty, the result would have been more comfortable. Best for Midleton were Peter O'Halloran and James Murphy who look foward with some confidence to the coming fixtures.
League v Douglas Hall Sept 5th
Douglas Hall 3 Midleton 0.
Our first league game back in the premier division ended in defeat to a very accomplished douglas hall team. Midleton had the better of the opening 20 min with a number of scoring chances going a begging, 2 lapes of concentration before halftime lead to midleton chasing the game in the second half. While a poor refereeing decision lead to a soft penalty securing the 3 points for "the hall".
Midleton's best performers on the day were Kevin Stack and Ray Barnes who battled gamefully hroughout, although the result was disappointing we can take a lot of positives from the game. We played a lot of crisp fast passing and we created a few good chances so its heads up and look foward to the next challenge.
