FAI 2019 Club of The Year Finalist, Midleton FC, has Club Badly Damaged in Mindless Break-In                                                                                                                                                                                      A mix of emotions swept over Midleton FC last weekend when only weeks after being selected as a FAI Club of the Year finalist, their clubhouse was subjected to a horrible act of vandalism. Late on Friday night Chairman of Midleton FC Mick Kirby received a phone call from Gardai to say local residents heard windows breaking at the Knockfgriffin premises.

It transpired that a young man who seemed to be under the influence of drink and drugs had broken a large double-glazed glass panel in the new Clubhouse that is used by many different organising within the community. Once inside there was extensive damage done to framed pictures of club team success in years gone by, the kitchen area was ransacked, a roller shutter door was destroyed using a fire extinguisher and the main multi-media area was sprayed with the contents of the extinguisher.

Midleton FC are one of only six clubs in the country who have been selected as a finalist in the FAI Club of the Year competition with the winner being announced during the FAI AGM dinner on Friday 26th July 2019 in Co.Meath.

The response from Mick Kirby, Club Chairman and Founder was measured and thoughtful,

“As a local football club everyone in the community contributes to provide a facility like this for the people of Midleton and this is just so sad for everyone. We hold fundraisers to help raise money for this building to happen and to see someone try to destroy it in a moment is hard to understand. However, we hope the person responsible receives the care they need and in due course the authorities will determine the right action to take. I would like to thank the local residents and Midleton Gardai who were very quick to the scene last night. Things could have been even worse without their intervention.”

Community Support

On Saturday local businesses rallied around to show their support with offers of help. Many club members called on Saturday morning to clean up the mess. Local businesses, Molly's Bar, Mill Grill/Pizza Plus and Subway have all organised their own fundraisers to help the club at this time of need.

Mick Kirby

“It hurts when someone does damage to facilities that volunteers have worked so hard to provide for our community. As a club we work extremely hard at fundraising to provide for our 700+ playing members. This is a set-back but the club will, with support, continue to provide the best possible facilities for all in the community.

The Mill Grill/Pizza Plus

On light of the shocking behaviour last night to Midleton F. C, we want to help!! 👊 Every Big Lunch sold on Saturday!! we will donate €3 to the club! 💪😁.... Get behind your local club! 👌

Julia Carr (Club Volunteer) Infuriating. So glad the cameras were working and hopefully those responsible will be caught. I’m thankful to be part of a community that rally around when bad things happen. For people wondering how they can help in a small way - support the club lotto. Tickets are sold in shops and pubs around town orbit can be done online. It’s only €2 a ticket and if everyone bought just one, fundraising could get an injection to fix the damage.

Messages from Local Community on Facebook

Caroline Dwyer It's an absolute disgrace. I see first hand how much time and effort all the volunteers of this fantastic club put into making this amazing facility available to the whole community. This mindless thug has no idea how difficult it is to fund raise and the time, effort and the money it takes to keep a facility like this running.

Majella Ryan An amenity for young people....a great sport for the kids for the summer! What satisfaction do these louts get of it??? Any fundraising will be totally supported by the people of the town if needs be!! Hope they get caught & they get more than a slap on the knuckles😂😂

Emma Brennan Absolutely shocking mindless behaviour carried out by someone who obviously doesn't appreciate the difference the Club makes to the community and how much hard work and effort is put in by the volunteers. Let us know if you need a hand with the clean up

Paula O'Donnell So sorry to hear that...such hard work to bring facilities to such a high standard only to be destroyed in this way...shame on those involved...if there is anything we can do to help here in Youghal just shout I for one would be happy to oblige
