Midleton FC places a great emphasis on the coaching of our young players. All our coaches are actively encouraged to attend coaching courses when possible. We host regular FAI Led programmes at our club ranging from the PDP 1 up to the FAI C License.

Beginning at our Academy, we have taken the strategic decision to take our volunteer parents and offer them coaching qualifications supported and funded by the club. We believe that by integrating the FAI Education programs with these parents, we can support their development as coaches to the ultimate benefit to our players, our coaches and our club. We combine this with our existing coaching structure so that we continue to develop new coaching talent while maintaining the club coaching ethos

Coaching Structure: As we have evolved our club we have created a hierarchical structure where we have installed a Head of Academy and Head Coaches at every year. The aim is to maintain one single point of contact for both the coaches within these groups and to represent these groups at a club management level

We centre our beliefs on:

  • Continuously improve the overall standard of coaching in the club of boys and girls
  • Set a standard coaching ethos within the club
  • Sponsor and Co-ordinate coaching courses and workshops for all club coaches
  • Provide assistance to coaches who are new to coaching kids
  • Harness the knowledge of long-standing coaches and players within the club to maintain the values of the club

Our club has a mix of coaching abilities and our structures are in place to ensure that coaches can reach their potential and add most value to the club. In the same way that we structure our playing teams, we similarly structure our coaching teams

Coaching workshops: We regularly run short workshops with club coaches, covering specific topics, related to team organisation and coaching methods for kid’s teams. So far, we have run workshops on:

  • Pre-game team warm-up routines
  • Organising defending and attacking corner kicks
  • The Coaching method
  • Coaching attacking principles of play
  • Coaching defensive principles of play
  • Team organisation for the relevant PDP structures
  • The benefits of Small Sided Games for player development

In 2019, we introduced an Academy workshop to bring together the newest members of our coaching family. This rotates between discussion and on-field coaching practice each month. The belief being explored here is that if the coaches can practice the routines ahead of the training sessions, they are planned and structured, designed for maximum player benefit and enjoyment.
